Download new voice for garmin gps4/13/2024 Just curious why a big, wealthy, international organization like Garmin, who depend entirely on GPS products that customers have to buy, can't figure out how to do voice command that works as well as a GPS product that is free. I spent a lot of money for a handheld Garmin and topo maps but really don't bother to take it with me anymore now that phones can do the same thing easier. There are a variety of apps that do this for topo maps or nautical charts that will let you use the built-in GPS on the phone for navigation when out of cell coverage. Hmm, I guess I assumed everybody knew you could make Google Maps (cloud-based) pre-load regions so you can still have access to it when off-line.Īnd there are many 3rd party apps that will let you download maps to your phone for use when out of cell coverage. You may want to re-read what you were responding to. Preload the maps before you go to those remote areas. and when you're in a remote area without access to the cloud.then those systems fail. Unless security is crucial, proprietary GPS systems based on downloading and locally storing maps on a dedicated device are inferior to cloud-based systems that can be, at least theoretically, updated constantly. The smart phone is the computer, camera, map, calling device, shopping tool, email tool, wallet, car and house keys, etc - there will be very little else in the future except for larger screen format devices that function primarily to provide a large working surface with interface when needed/desired into your personal computing device (phone). Interface will work for both private cars and public cars. Smart phone will contain all preferences and parameters for that driver and that seat as well as security and entry authentication. The same can be said for the various car makers proprietary voice recognition and processing software and hardware along with their universally terrible NAV capability and its interface - most are obsolete rubbish by the time they are released as proprietary OEM equipment in current model cars.Ĭar makers are slowly realizing this, and the smart ones will instead devote their design, research, and build dollars into providing a very robust, and highly featured primarily screen driven smart interface into the driver's (and occupants) smart phone in the future. Garman's proprietary voice recognition software and the hardware they use to input and process your voice that runs on their navigation device has fallen behind and likely will never again be able to come close to the level of sophistication of software from google and power of the hardware from a current phone. Does anyone know why Maps is so good and why Garmin voice command functions like a high school project? Just curious why a big, wealthy, international organization like Garmin, who depend entirely on GPS products that customers have to buy, can't figure out how to do voice command that works as well as a GPS product that is free. So, I turned to Google Maps in my smartphone and spoke the name once and bingo, we're on the way. It's actually kind of hilarious and frustrating at the same time. When I spoke this into the Garmin you wouldn't believe the wacky selection options it came up with - not even close. As an example, I wanted to navigate to a place called the "Jeanne Jugan Center" yesterday. Whenever I attempt to navigate by speaking the name of the destination, the Garmin chokes on anything that is the least bit atypical while Google Maps handles it like a champ even if you aren't right on with the name. I continue to be astounded at how inept the voice command is compared to Google Maps on my smartphone and it doesn't seem to be improving. I have an in-dash Garmin Navi in my vehicle and have used dash mounted Garmins as well.
